My baby was throwing up and I couldn't sleep, so I worked out this problem on a sheet of paper... Ah, the joys of parenting. I used the Computone RAS 2000 PowerRack Hardware Guide and the Avocent CPS Installer User Guide to help me figure out the pinouts for this cable. The setup: I have several extra Computone serial DB9 dongles, and I have a demo CPS 1610 unit with no Avocent dongles, and I have lots of spare Cat5 cable and ends. (NEW) We recently also discovered that this works on the ESP as well, since they have the same port pinouts. However, it won't work on the ELS-II. For cable end pinouts, I am using this numbering order: ____________________________________ / __________________________________ CAT5 / / /-----------------/| 1 - Green + White stripe / CABLE / | 2 - Green / / | 3 - Orange + White stripe /_________________/ | 4 - Blue / / / / / / / / / / / 5 - Blue + White stripe |-|-|-|-|-|-|-|-|-| / 6 - Orange | | / 7 - Brown + White stripe | 8 7 6 5 4 3 2 1 | / 8 - Brown |_________________|/ | TAB | \ \ \_____\

Summary:

Use standard Cat5 ethernet wiring on Avocent CPS or ESP end (I picked that for simplicity since I am used to crimping this standard already). Here it is for completeness: 1 - Green + White stripe 2 - Green 3 - Orange + White stripe 4 - Blue 5 - Blue + White stripe 6 - Orange 7 - Brown + White stripe 8 - Brown Use this order for the Computone dongle end: 1 - Green 2 - Orange + White stripe 3 - Brown + White stripe 4 - Orange 5 - Blue 6 - Blue + White stripe 7 - Brown 8 - Green + White stripe One caveat: in the Computone Dongle, DSR is ignored (disconnected) on the console server end -- this would typically connect to DTR on the dongle end (along with DCD on the server end). Whether or not this is ultimately important to the Avocent CPS / ESP is unclear to me.
